Four time Grammy award winner, ginger prince, one time Game of Thrones guest star, and possibly (probably) my treasure.
Ed Sheeran may have fallen off the radar–and into the trash–for many of you, but the man has talent. I’m not talking about the blue album or the green one or whichever one he dressed up like a vampire for, but his first album (you know, the orange one with the math related title) is a no-skips, singer-songwriter masterpiece.
The year is 2011, Ed Sheeran is sleeping on Jamie Foxx’s couch, his red hair is standing on end while putting pen to page and suddenly, he’s done it. He’s written the song that would play anytime you connected to a bluetooth speaker–The A Team. And sure, did the entire population grow sick of this song in record time? Absolutely! But one tired song does not an album make and 14 years later, I’m still listening to “+”.
Regardless of whether Ed Sheeran fell prey to the Hollywood music making machine, his first album stands the test of time at least a million streams (all from my car). It’s an album that made me love music, made me want to learn how to play guitar, and start writing music for myself.
Basic things are basic for a reason, they’re palatable and they unite people with a common interest, the horror. But most things that are basic now were once new and fresh and interesting and still hold up today. OG Ed Sheeran? It holds up.
Listen if you’re brave enough to admit you like an artist that other people like!
